MIA for 2010!

Well I’d say it’s safe to say I lost my battle in 2010 and my drive as well. My goal for 2011 was to find it all again and I have. I am back kicking the shit out of life and food!

The problem for me, as I know it is for other people is that when the shit hits the fan in life I go running to my best friends; Miss Vicky, A & W, Quizno’s and many other forms of toxic, processed,  emotions numbing goodness.

Now I didn’t do so terrible but the feeling I had from changing my diet to include more processed food again did not help my mental state.  Not to mention I was also living and working in processed food hell, but that’s another story.

The only saving grace, again, is my allergies. They at leased prevent me from going into a crazy binge fest.

But I digress. I would like to pick up where I left off oooooohhhh so many months ago with Natural Flavour.

In my research I have learned that Natural Flavour is  proprietary. This means that the contents of said “Natural Flavour” never needs to be disclosed.  If you have allergies….beware. It could be anything. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency,

“while the ingredient can be described as “natural”, the food itself cannot, since it contains an added component.” Also,   “Substances which impart flavours which have been derived from a plant or animal source, may be claimed to be “natural”. As well, any additive, such as preservatives and solvents added to a flavour preparation to have a technological effect solely on the flavour, does not modify the “natural” status of the flavouring material itself.”

Yikes!!! That’s all I have to say.

Since Canada is not the only country in the world, I’ll add some info from the country that believes they are ;).

According to the FDA’s Code of Federal Regulations Title 21,

“(3) The termnatural flavor ornatural flavoring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional. Natural flavors, include the natural essence or extractives obtained from plants listed in subpart A of part 582 of this chapter, and the substances listed in 172.510 of this chapter.”

Either way, although these flavours being used do not have their original sources from man made products, they are nonetheless a secret and secrets in food are never good.

So next time you, your bf, your husband, wife, gf, father or mother is picky about what kind of oil or gas they put in their automobile ask yourself this “If I am  not willing to put unknown bad mixed oil or gas in my/their/our vehicle then why the hell am I allowing unknown random mixed products into my body or my child’s body?”

Cliche but you are what you eat!

Today I will be whole food void of natural flavour.

Happy Eating!
